 Unrelated to the thread, however I think the joke dates back to IRC (Internet Relay Chat). IRC was used way before the advant of social media. Especially the likes of Discord, Guilded, Matrix etc. It was used by, I'm going to start loosely here: corporations, hospitals, office meetings and so forth. I could see corporations using it to host meetings if someone was out that day, such as a CEO, or another person in a high position. The same applies to hospitals, if the board of the hospital couldn't meet up. Such as if doctors/nurses were taken care of a loved one, and if they had a computer that could connect to IRC they would host the meeting there. 

Eventually IRC garnered the attention of online/gaming communities in the late 90s/00s. Simon eventually set up an IRC for the community. Now that is a lot to unpack for a joke.

This thread is about the 2008 server crash, which sounds like it actually happened in 2009. Then Simon got the source code through a third party around May/June of 2010, rebuilds the game from scratch and website. Since Unaligned.org was no longer around. Fyi, that's not Simon, that's Simon's corpse. He's a zombie, just kidding. He only appears when there's biscuits (cookies) around! 

Edit: I'd like note the IRC information may be incorrect, I went off information provided by Google. That doesn't mean it's correct or incorrect. IRC has been used by developers/people who like Open Source. So if my information is wrong, take it with a grain of salt!
